Prayer Poem by CS Lewis

 The following is a poem written by CS Lewis on the topic of prayer:


“Master, they say that when I seem
    To be in speech with you,
Since you make no replies, it’s all a dream
  – One talker aping two.
 
They are half right, but not as they
   Imagine; rather, I
Seek in myself the things I meant to say,
   And lo! the wells are dry.
 
Then, seeing me empty, you forsake
   The Listener’s role, and through
My dead lips breathe and into utterance wake
   The thoughts I never knew.
 
And thus you neither need reply
   Nor can; thus, while we seem
Two talking, thou art One forever, and I
   No dreamer, but thy dream.

Although more reflection could easily be given to this spectacular work, I think we can find individual self-reflection may serve us better. I have given some questions below that may aid you in this search, however, just as in a Socratic discussion there are no correct/wrong answers, there are no correct questions to ask in a reflection. We simply need to meditate on what our thoughts are and what we interpret.

Questions

How do I go about praying? What are my "steps"? Is it a true conversation? Is it a routine?

What are the thoughts we never knew?

The last paragraph can be quite thought-provoking when re-reading. What is CS Lewis saying here? Are we in communication with God? How are we God's dream?
